Tesla Model Y wiper blades: sizes, Wiper Service Mode and step-by-step replacement

Two sizes and one touchscreen setting are all it takes on a Model Y: a 650 mm blade on the driver’s side, a 500 mm blade on the passenger side, and Wiper Service Mode switched on before you touch anything source. Tesla also recommends replacing Tesla Model Y wiper blades at least once a year, an interval that appears in its scheduled maintenance list too source.

The right sizes, and the right connector

Length is not everything. The manual asks you to make sure the connector on the replacement blade is the same as on the original, otherwise it may not attach to the wiper arm. It recommends installing only blades identical to the originals, and warns that unsuitable blades can damage the wiper system and the windscreen source.

Before replacing, cleaning is sometimes enough. The manual lists the contaminants that reduce wiper performance: ice, wax spray from car washes, washer fluid with bug or water repellent, bird droppings, tree sap and other organic matter. Clean with washer fluid, isopropyl alcohol or a non-abrasive glass cleaner approved for automotive glass and rubber. If the wipers are still ineffective, it is time for new blades.

This goes beyond comfort: ineffective wipers can reduce visibility for the cameras behind the windscreen, which can degrade or disable the car’s driver assistance features source.

Wiper Service Mode is not optional

Model Y wiper arms do not stand up vertically as on many other cars. The manual asks you to shift into Park, turn the wipers off, then touch Controls > Service > Wiper Service Mode.

The arm is then lifted just far enough to reach the blade. The manual is clear that the blades do not lock into a raised position, and that the arm must not be lifted beyond its intended position source. A towel between the arm and the glass prevents scratches or cracks if the arm slips.

Fitting the new blade ends with a check the manual describes precisely: a push-pull test to confirm it is locked in place. A blade that has not clicked home can come off while the wipers are working and cause serious damage.

Washer fluid has more rules than you might think

The washer reservoir is the only one owners can top up themselves. It sits behind the front trunk, holds 4.5 litres, and the touchscreen warns you when the level is low. The manual recommends cleaning around the filler cap before opening it, then filling until the fluid is just below the filler neck source.

Three don’ts come with it. No fluid containing water repellent or bug wash, which cause streaking, smearing and squeaking. No untreated water, which can lead to bacterial growth in the climate control system, with odours and damage not covered by the warranty. And below 4 °C, use a washer fluid with antifreeze, or visibility through the windscreen may suffer.

The European manual also notes that some regulations restrict volatile organic compounds, and that local regulations prohibit methanol-based washer fluid, pointing you to an ethanol-based fluid instead. A blocked washer jet can be cleared with a thin strand of wire, without operating the washers while you do it.
