Winter tyre rules across Europe for Tesla drivers: what four countries require and how to comply

There is no single European winter tyre law: each country sets its own rule, and the four covered here disagree on dates, on triggers and even on which marking counts. France requires winter equipment from 1 November to 31 March in designated mountain areas source, while Germany ties its rule to road conditions rather than the calendar source. This guide to Tesla winter tyre rules in Europe only lists countries whose rule we read at the source, then shows how to apply it with the constraints Tesla sets for its cars.

What four countries require

The table sums up the rule for passenger cars, as each authority publishes it. It does not replace the local rules on your route, which can add requirements of their own.

In France, the obligation covers certain municipalities in six mountain ranges, and signs at the entrance to each zone make it enforceable. Winter tyres in the sense of the decree are those marked 3PMSF, the alpine symbol; otherwise at least two chains or socks must be carried for the driven wheels, even when there is no snow source.

Germany’s StVO § 2 (3a) says a motor vehicle may only be driven in black ice, packed snow, slush, ice or hoar frost if all wheels carry tyres meeting § 36 (4) of the StVZO source. That paragraph defines winter tyres as tyres marked with the Alpine symbol, a mountain pictogram with a snowflake. Paragraph 5 adds a point that matters on a fast car: if the winter tyres are rated below the car’s top speed, their maximum speed must be shown in the driver’s field of view, on a sticker or on a display, and must not be exceeded source.

Austria applies its rule to cars up to 3.5 t from 1 November to 15 April, but only in wintry conditions such as snow, slush or ice on the road. A tyre qualifies if it carries M+S, M.S. or M&S, or a snowflake symbol; alternatively, snow chains may be fitted to at least two driven wheels, but only on a more or less continuous layer of snow or ice source.

Sweden requires winter tyres or equivalent equipment from 1 December to 31 March when there is snow, ice, slush or frost on any part of the road, and the police decide whether conditions are wintry. Tyres must carry the alpine symbol or be studded, with at least 3 mm of tread, and the rule applies to vehicles registered abroad as well source.

Winter tyres or chains: the right choice for a Tesla

For a Tesla that regularly heads into snow, four winter tyres are the simplest answer, and the only one that works in all four countries. Tesla recommends winter tyres in cold temperatures or where there may be snow or ice, asks for a complete set of four fitted at the same time, and identifies them by the mountain and snowflake symbol. The manual also warns that performance summer tyres lose grip below 5 °C, and that tyres with less than 4 mm of tread should not be used in winter conditions source. After fitting them, select winter tyres under Controls > Service > Wheel & Tire > Tires: regenerative braking can be temporarily reduced with aggressive tread, and the car recalibrates faster. Chains are the lighter option where the law accepts them, as in France and Austria. On the Model Y, Tesla has tested and approved chains on the rear tyres only, in three König references depending on size: CG-9 size 105 for 18-inch, XG-12 Pro size 252 for 19 and 20-inch, and K-Summit XXL K66 for 21-inch. The manual adds that wheel covers must come off first, that chains must never go on summer tyres, and that you should not exceed 48 km/h source. The Tesla Shop listing recommends removing the Gemini covers on 19-inch Gemini wheels before fitting chains, to avoid scratches and scuffs source. Choose snow chains and socks for Model Y for the exact size of your rear tyres.

These instructions come from the Model Y manual. The manual itself reminds you that chains are prohibited in some jurisdictions and asks you to check local laws before fitting them.

The M+S trap when you cross a border

The costliest mistake is not a lack of equipment but the wrong equipment. France is explicit: “all season” and “all weather” labels have no legal definition, and only tyres marked 3PMSF count as the equivalent of chains source. Germany and Sweden also refer to the alpine symbol, whereas Austria still accepts M+S markings on their own.

So a tyre marked only M+S can be enough in Tyrol and not enough across the border in Bavaria. Before a winter trip, look at your sidewalls. If you see the three-peak mountain with the snowflake, your tyres carry the marking all four countries covered here accept, provided the tread is deep enough. If not, carry chains or socks sized for your rear wheels where they are accepted, and practise fitting them in the dry: the French road safety authority recommends it, because a first attempt on a snowy verge rarely goes well.
