Do all-season tyres count as winter tyres on a Tesla?

It depends on one marking, and on the country. An all-season tyre counts as a winter tyre in France only if its sidewall carries the 3PMSF alpine symbol, a three-peak mountain with a snowflake; “all season” and “all weather” labels have no legal definition there source.

Why the sidewall matters more than the label

Germany defines winter tyres in § 36 (4) of the StVZO as tyres marked with the Alpine symbol, so an M+S-only tyre does not meet its winter rule source. Sweden likewise asks for the alpine symbol or studded tyres source. Austria is more lenient: M+S, M.S., M&S or a snowflake symbol all qualify, and all-weather tyres count if they carry one of those markings source.

Tesla draws its own line. The Model Y manual says all-season tyres, recognisable by ALL SEASON or M+S on the sidewall, may not give the same traction as winter tyres on snow or ice, and identifies winter tyres by the mountain and snowflake symbol source. Before a winter trip, check all four sidewalls: with the alpine symbol you are covered in every country in the article below, while M+S alone leaves you relying on chains where they are accepted.
